The Apple iPhone 5 looks a lot like the iPhone 4S but it’s thinner, by 18 per cent, and lighter, by 20 per cent. The screen is taller too, at 4-inches corner to corner, but the phone, held in portrait mode, is the same width. Instead of a glass back, the iPhone 5 back and sides are made from a single piece of aluminium.

The handset is powered by an A6 processor, an upgrade from the A5 chip in the iPhone 4S and the A5X in the latest iPad. Apple says the A6 delivers CPU and graphics performance that is twice as fast as the iPhone 4S.

Though the camera is still 8-megapixels, Apple says that performance will be improved by the new A6 processor. The iPhone 5 also has better low-light performance and a new panorama mode.

But crucially Apple confirmed the iPhone 5 would be enabled for superfast 4G services on the 1800 MHz frequency used in on the telstra Australian Telstra 4G network.

The Internet Age is in full swing. However, many small business owners have yet to adopt the methodologies of this trend. In fact, quite a few small business owners do not even have a website for their company. Perhaps the unknown about the setup or the cost of developing a website, maintaining that website and purchasing a domain name keep them from taking advantage of these powerful tools. If you find yourself in this situation, it’s incredibly important that you get on board.

Why do you need a website?

In today’s world, consumers expect a business, small or large to have their own website. In the eyes of a consumer, having a website is a measure of viability, or stability. In short, if you do not own a website, then your customers might not take you quite as seriously as they would if you did. Why is this? What’s so important about having a website for your small business?

To the eyes of a consumer, having a quality, professionally designed website is a measure of how successful your business is and how likely you are to remain in business. Small businesses without a website seems too small or possibly unprofessional. If you do not have a web presence, consumers are likely to think that you are not making enough money for one and are likely to suffer the consequences of that lack of income.

Another excellent reason to have a website for your company is that it provides you with numerous options for cost effective (or even free) marketing. Simply having a website (optimized for SEO “Search Engine Optimisation” of course) gives you a spot in search results for your targeted keywords, no matter where you might rank in the search results. In addition, having a website provides your current and potential customers a means by which to measure your worth to their needs, without actually having to visit your store in person or when you’re closed.

Finally, owning a website enables you to grow your business on a global scale, rather than simply in the local or regional market. As consumers the world over can visit your company’s website, peruse your goods and services and make a purchase decision, this can be an invaluable tool for increasing your profitability and incurring growth. In short, if you do not have a website, you need one. If you opt not to develop this powerful tool, you could find that your company suffers considerably.

Remember to ensure your files are backed up on March 31st.

Backup your memories and financial information and check your old backup restores.

Backing up your important data is easier than you think.

It’s a good idea to backup files regularly and in at least two separate places, just to be safe. It’s also smart to have a local backup and offsite backup locations. Although finding that your computer and one of your backups unrecoverable at the same time is very, very, unlikely, it’s not out of the question. Backing up is a sure-fire way to ensure the safety of your most precious digital data, whether it be photos, videos or important documents.

There are many different ways to back up the data most precious to you. We’ve detailed the three simplest and cheapest solutions below.

External hard drive

By far the quickest and easiest way to make copies of your important files. Go out and buy an external hard drive (preferably one with a large capacity). You can find these at any electronics or office supply store.

When you’ve bought the device and plugged it in, simply find the files you want to back up and drag/copy them onto your new drive. It’s a good idea to do this regularly – you can even get an app that does this automatically.

DVD

Burning your important files to a CD, DVD or Blu-ray disc is a relatively cheap and easy way to back up important files. Assuming you already have a disc burner, you can generally just drag-n-drop your files into the included burning software and hit the burn button (If you don’t have burning software, try CDBurnerXP).

Once they’re done, take care to store the discs in a safe place to avoid them being scratched or damaged. Burning your files to disc takes much longer and is more inconvenient than copying them onto a hard drive, but can be more durable in the long run.

Online (or offsite) backup

Storing your files with an online storage provider is much easier than it sounds, and is possibly the most reliable way keeping your files safe. Many online storage providers offer a sizable amount of storage space for free.

This makes backup convenient and painless, as long as you have a reasonable internet connection. However, data recovery from sites can sometimes be very slow, as you have to re-download your files. Some companies, however, offer the option of shipping a hard drive to you with your data for a fee. Some online backup services also automatically create a local backup on an external had drive in addition to uploading your data to an offsite backup datacenter. This makes it really simple to create a local and offsite backup automatically!

More: http://www.worldbackupday.com/

Apple Australia has agreed to post signs wherever its new tablet computer is sold clarifying the device does not work on Australian fourth-generation mobile networks.

Telstra operates a 4G network using long-term-evolution (LTE) technology at 1800 megahertz, while Vividwireless operates a 4G network using WiMax technology at 2.3 gigahertz.

Apple’s new iPad works on 4G networks tuned to 700 MHz or 2. 1 GHz – frequencies only used the United States and Canada. It still operates on Australian 3G networks.

The tech giant has also agreed to email anyone who purchased the new iPad stating the limitation and to offer refunds to consumers.

Also Telstra currently at time of posting doesn’t support iPad being a Personal Hotspot. This feature is locked in Australia at this time..

Google Maps means that your business will appear in Google

Search results for end-users looking
for your business in your local area. Further to this, the rise in popularity
of Smartphones and other GPS enabled devices means that more and more users are
using Google Maps to find their nearest Service or Product. Australia is
leading the world in the usage of these mobile services, so don’t be left
behind.

Help
your business stand out

Add photos, videos, and offers to show
customers why they’ll want to choose you. Highlight special promotions, post
live updates, and respond to reviews from your Places for business account.

Discover
insights about your business

Learn more about your customers: What
keywords they’re searching for and where they’re coming from. Armed with this
knowledge, you can make better business decisions

What
if I don’t have a store or office?

Every business listing must have a
mailing address. If you work from home or you are a mobile business you can
specify a “service area” in the sign up process and choose to hide your
physical address.

Fill out all of the following that are
relevant:

• Name
of business

• Street
address

• Phone
number (and any additional numbers)

• Fax
number

• Email
address

• Website

• Description
of business

• Categories
(choose 5 – pick the most relevant one that fits your business first)

• Service
areas

• Hours
of operation

• Payment
options

• Upload
photos (the first one you upload becomes the primary image so choose wisely)

• Upload
videos

• Additional
details such as: Parking available: Yes

When you use an iOS app or feature that uses the Internet, your iPhone, iPad, or iPod attempts to connect to the Internet as follows:

Your device connects to your current Wi-Fi network if available.

If not available, your device attempts to connect to any nearby Wi-Fi networks you have previously used.

If there are no previous Wi-Fi networks in range, a list of available Wi-Fi networks appears. You can tap to join a Wi-Fi network, and if necessary enter the password to join it.
Note: Wi-Fi networks that require a password are indicated by a padlock icon next to them.

If no Wi-Fi networks are available or if you choose not to join one, iPhone and iPad (cellular models) connect using an available cellular data network.

Wi-Fi

Wi-Fi is often faster than cellular data networks, but may not be available in many locations.

To locate nearby Wi-Fi networks, tap Settings > Wi-Fi. Tap a network to join it.

Depending on the Wi-Fi network, it may be necessary to enter a password.

When connected to a Wi-Fi network, the Wi-Fi icon in the status bar displays connection strength. The more bars you see, the stronger the connection.

Many Wi-Fi networks can be used free of charge, but some require a fee or subscription to use.

If you are experiencing difficulty joining a Wi-Fi network, see Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections for more information.

Note: iOS devices sold in China may use the term Wireless LAN (WLAN) instead of Wi-Fi. Not all China iPhone models support WLAN; see this article for more information.

Cellular data networks (Telstra , Optus etc)

Cellular data networks provide Internet connectivity using the cellular network. See Understanding cellular data networks for more information.

When your iPhone or iPad (cellular model) is connected a cellular data network, the status bar will display 4G, 3G, E, or °, depending on your iOS device and your carrier’s network capabilities.

When traveling internationally, you may be able to use a cellular data network from another carrier. Roaming charges may apply.

You can adjust cellular network settings on iPhone in Settings > General > Network; on iPad the settings are located in Settings > Cellular Data.

Depending on the carrier, iPad users may sign up for monthly data plans from Settings > Cellular Data. For more information see How to set up a cellular data account.

If you are experiencing difficulty joining a cellular data network, see Troubleshooting a cellular data connection for more information.

Wondering how to setup iOS 5′s new iMessage service on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch?

Using iMessage you can send text messages, photos, video and much more to other iMessage users around the world, all over your existing data connection. That’s right, no texting plans or charges needed! Here’s how to get started.

Let’s take a look at the iPhone first

•First off ensure your running the latest iOS 5 software
•Select settings
•Select Messages
•Turn the toggle switch for iMessage to on

•You should see a message saying “Activating”
•You can now enter your receive to addresses, this can be an email address (Apple ID) or just your iPhone phone number, or both. The phone number part should already be filled out
•If you have an Apple ID and want to use that as well as your phone number, enter it here

•Once completed you will now have an active iMessage account on your iPhone
•You can toggle various options on and off such as read recipts etc
•Also you have an option to send as an SMS if iMessage data connection is not available
That is all you need, you now have iMessage set up on your iPhone!

Now for the iPad and iPod touch
Setting up iMessage on the iPad and iPod touch is slightly diferent as these devices do not have any telephone number associated with them. •First off ensure your running the latest iOS 5 software
•Select settings
•Select Messages
•Turn the toggle switch for iMessage to on
•A new box will open asking you for an Apple ID

•If you have an Apple ID, enter it here
•If you don’t have one, select Create New Account
•Once completed you will now have an active iMessage account on your iPad or iPod touch
Ok now we have iMessage set up there are a few things to consider. If you only have one device then you are fine. If you have multiple iOS 5 devices then you will need to think about how you want them to work. Do you want separate iMessage accounts for each device? More than likely, you would want one account that stays in sync across all of your devices.

If you want separate iMessage accounts for each device, you will need to create separate Apple ID’s for each device, these can be created for free in the iMessage original set up screen. Just select Create New Account.

If you want to have all devices use one iMessage account then you need to input the same Apple ID details into each device iMessage setup page.

That should be all you need to get started with iMessage!

Note: On iPhone, if iMessage is unavailable, the message may be sent as SMS or MMS, depending on content. Carrier messaging rates will may apply. You can turn this on or off in iPhone at Settings > Messages > Send As SMS. Messages sent using iMessage will appear in a light blue bubble, while messages sent using SMS or MMS will appear in a green bubble.

SMS and MMS

SMS and MMS messaging requires an appropriate plan from your carrier for use on iPhone. For more information on how to use SMS and MMS messaging on iPhone, see the iPhone User Guide.

Note: Some carriers may automatically convert long SMS messages (ones that would require multiple SMS messages to send) into MMS format.

If you experience an issue with iMessage, SMS, or MMS messaging, try the steps outlined in this article from Apple.com.au

Secure your brand name online.

What you need to know is that as you build your brand over the life of your business, your brand name is going to become progressively more valuable. I’m here to offer some advice on a simple effort that you can make now, to prevent your competitors from benefiting from your brand value down the road. Let me explain.

Let’s say you’ve built a great web site to promote your Famous Pizzeria. Your website address is yourfamouspizzeria.com. Now, imagine a smart competitor who knows your good reputation, registers yourfamouspizzeria.net and has all the traffic here (based on your good brand reputation) redirected to his pizzeria at myfamouspizzeria.com. Maybe he is also smart or sly enough to buy some advertising on Google search so when people search for your Famous Pizzeria, his ad appears on the results page that directs people to his own web site. Frustrating thought isn’t it?

Unfortunately, it happens all the time, you just need to outsmart your competitors and make sure you secure your brand name online by purchasing yourfamouspizzeria.net and maybe even myfamouspizzeria.com, and .net, .org, .info, and .biz, for good measure. You get the idea. To secure your brand online, obtain ownership of anything a customer might search when they are looking for yourfamouspizzeria.com.

A Facebook Fan Page can give users a Page for this special access, users will frequently visit, avidly await updates, follow calls to action, and tie their identity more closely to what the Page represents. Intimacy is particularly effective for Pages representing public figures since it can make users feel like they are friends with someone they admire.

Your Facebook Page is visible to people who are not logged in to Facebook, so you can add links to your Facebook Page on other websites and blogs. Internet search engines “Google will also index your Page and share it with their users. Your Facebook page is a great opportunity to market your business, but it’s earned media, so keep in mind that it’s a community too. Give your Fans a reason to want to come back.

Think of a Facebook page like any other landing page on the Web. In such a case, it’s important that the landing page segments user types to help funnel a conversion. In the case of a brand with distinct audiences, a custom Facebook landing tab can make it clear to the different segments that the company has something to offer them all. Your company Facebook page shouldn’t have a corporate, stuffy tone.

Why should I register a username for my Facebook Page?

Usernames allow public entities to easily promote your presence on Facebook with a short URL. This username can be used in your marketing communications, company website and business cards.
